LANCASTER LONDON WINS OUTSTANDING ENVIRONMENTAL AWARD
January 2010

The full-service deluxe Lancaster London hotel is celebrating after being awarded the Silver Accreditation from Green Tourism for London. The award represents official recognition of the hotel’s environmental policies.

The Green Tourism for London scheme was launched in 2007 by the London Development Agency. The organisation aims to improve the environmental performance and green credentials of hotels, guesthouses, venues and attractions across London.

The awards, which are only given after an assessment by an independent assessor, allow visitors to judge the true green potentials of businesses. The review of the business takes into account a wide array of factors including, traditional energy and resource management, as well as efforts to actively promote public transport, local cultural activities and London’s open spaces.

Lancaster London has introduced a variety of environmental policies throughout the hotel. As well as the standard procedures, such as energy saving light bulbs, recycling bins for staff and guests and temperature caps on the water boilers, the hotel has also taken more innovative steps. In summer 2009, the hotel became the first in London to install beehives on its roof, not only helping to save the depleting bee population, but also reducing the food miles on the hotels honey.

An “Environmental Task Force” has been introduced at the Lancaster London to monitor the savings throughout the hotel. The team also arranges an annual internal “Green Awareness Day” to educate staff throughout the hotel on the environmental policies.

Stephen Kyjak-Lane, General Manager at the Lancaster London, stated: “We are delighted to have been awarded the Silver Accreditation. It is a testament to the whole team, who have been working extremely hard to reduce the hotel’s environmental impact.”
